Simplifying energy-efficient product legislation must also support innovation
The European Infrared Heating Alliance (EIHA) welcomes the European Commission’s initiative to simplify energy-efficient product legislation under the Omnibus simplification package. Reducing unnecessary administrative burdens is essential – especially for SMEs that form the backbone of Europe’s clean heating sector.
Infrared heating is a low-complexity, CO₂-free technology that can play a meaningful role in Europe’s energy transition. It offers an affordable heating solution for homes and buildings, requires minimal installation effort, and works particularly well in combination with renewable electricity, photovoltaics and smart grids.
As legislation evolves, it is crucial that Ecodesign and Energy Labelling frameworks reflect the specific characteristics of infrared local space heaters. Simplification should deliver real reductions in paperwork while maintaining consumer trust and effective market surveillance.
EIHA also supports the move towards digital-by-default product information, including streamlined EPREL processes and replacing printed documentation with digital access. This reduces costs, environmental impact and administrative complexity.
A simpler, technology-neutral regulatory framework will not only reduce bureaucracy but also help accelerate the decarbonisation of Europe’s buildings, support affordable heating solutions and strengthen European industry.
EIHA looks forward to continuing the dialogue with the European Commission on the future of energy-efficient heating technologies.
